Let's Boil Some Water

Seems to me that in order to be an Overlander or backpacker, one must carry a ginormous Jet Boil just to produce hot water. Now, I have never owned nor used one, and they must be a good product since so many are out in the field. But why all the fuss for a large, expensive, and bulky item?

I prefer the super simple, compact, robust, and old school Primus Classic Trail stove. Checking off those boxes plus measuring a tiny 5” x 5” x 3” and only weighing 7oz makes it an amazing piece of gear. With just two components, three if you include the fuel canister, set up takes one minute. With the four point contact support frame, pots and pans of various sizes can safely be utilized.

To test its 10k BTU output, the time it took to boil two cups of water at an altitude of 551 feet (water boiling point = 211F ) in a MSR Seagull Stainless Steel pot was just...

1 minute, 51 seconds

Say what! From waking up and being at the back of Polū’s tail gate, I can have a cup of tea ready in six minutes; most excellent!

Invented in Sweden and launched back in the 80’s, this stove is both a classic (hence its name) and a workhorse. I bought my Primus stove from REI probably in the mid-2000’s. Being so tiny, it lives inside my cooking supply tub’s single pot and never gets left at home.
